Melissacopy.jpg (30738 bytes)Melissa Saunders Perryman approaches art from the perspective of a naturalist. She has worked with the Yellowstone Gray Wolf Restoration Project (1996-1997), the Gypsy Moth Project of George Washington National Forest (1997), and has been a naturalist at a science center for over seven years. She has worked closely with various species of wild birds, river otters, white-tailed deer, and many domestic varieties of animals.

Melissa earned her BS in Biology from UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a self-taught artist. Her illustrations of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, elk, and native western North American flora grace the outdoor exhibitry of the National Bighorn Sheep Center of Dubois, WY. Her wolf illustrations are incorporated in presentations and literature of the Yellowstone Wolf Project.

Melissa currently lives on a farm in northwestern North Carolina. She shares her home with llamas, goats, cats, dogs, and many wild creatures.

Melissa works in other mediums, such as watercolor, mixed media, and clay, but when depicting wildlife she prefers black and white, using her meticulously detailed style. Her early renderings included little or no background, focusing the work entirely on the animal(s). As her work progresses, she has developed a more traditional approach to backgrounds while maintaining her own unique style.
